What Does P0430 Mean?
P0430 is the bank 2 sibling of P0420 — the ECM has determined that the catalytic converter on bank 2 (the cylinder bank not containing cylinder 1) is no longer converting exhaust gases efficiently. On a BMW X5 with the N62 V8 or N55 inline-six, bank 2 is the passenger side on most US-market layouts.
The diagnosis is identical to P0420: compare upstream and downstream O2 sensor signals. If the downstream sensor is mirroring the upstream, the cat has lost its storage capacity. On European V-engines like the BMW V8s, P0420 and P0430 often appear together as both cats age at the same rate.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis
Confirm with freeze frame and trims
Capture freeze frame for P0430. Check bank 2 long-term fuel trim — anything beyond ±10% means a fuel issue is contributing.

On the BMW N62, the downpipe flex section cracks often. Any leak before B2S2 will throw P0430 on a healthy cat.
Swap-test B2S2 with B1S2 if available
On a V-engine you have matched sensors on each bank. Swap them, clear codes. If P0420 now appears instead of P0430, the sensor was the fault.
Decide repair scope
If the cat is genuinely failed, plan to replace both bank cats together — they age in parallel. Replacing only one means you'll be back in 6–12 months for the other.

Procedure:
- Let exhaust cool minimum 3 hours.
