What Does P0455 Mean?

P0455 is set when the ECM detects a large (gross) leak in the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system. The EVAP system captures gasoline vapors from the fuel tank and routes them to the engine to be burned instead of vented. A gross leak is anything roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil or larger.

On a Hyundai Sonata, P0455 is most commonly a loose, cracked, or worn gas cap (about 60% of the time), followed by a stuck-open purge valve and cracked EVAP hoses. The fix is often free — tighten the cap, drive a few cycles, and the light clears.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

Inspect and re-tighten the gas cap

Remove cap, inspect the O-ring for cracks or debris, wipe clean, and reinstall until you hear three clicks. Drive 2–3 full cycles. If the light clears, you're done.

Pro TipIf the cap O-ring is brittle, glossy, or flat, replace the cap entirely. They're $15–$25 and the most common cure.

Smoke-test the EVAP system

Connect an EVAP smoke tester at the service port (under hood on most Sonatas). Pressurize at 0.5 psi and watch for smoke escaping at hoses, the canister, the purge valve, or the filler neck.

WarningNever use shop air directly into the EVAP system — even 5 psi can blow the charcoal out of the canister.

Inspect EVAP hoses near canister

The canister lives near the fuel tank on most Sonatas. Crawl under and inspect every rubber hose at its plastic connector — that's where cracks form first.

Test the purge valve

With key on engine off, command the purge valve open and closed with your scanner. You should hear it click. With engine running and at operating temp, the valve should hold vacuum when commanded closed.

Clear codes and drive monitor cycle

The EVAP monitor requires specific conditions to run: fuel level 15–85%, ambient temp 40–90°F, sustained highway cruise. Plan a 30–45 minute drive to complete the test.
