What Does P0606 Mean?

P0606 indicates the engine ECM (or PCM) has failed its internal processor self-test. Modern ECMs run continuous integrity checks on RAM, ROM, and computational results. When one fails, the ECM sets P0606 and often goes into a reduced-function mode to protect the engine.

On the 2010–2019 Subaru Outback (FB25/FB20 engines), P0606 is most often caused by a power or ground issue — corroded battery terminals, weak alternator, or a bad ECM ground strap. Always verify electrical supply before condemning the ECM itself.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

Check battery and charging system

Load-test the battery (must hold 9.6V+ under load). Measure alternator voltage (13.8–14.5V at idle). Test AC ripple — must be under 50mV. Bad alternator = bad ECM, fast.

  Battery voltage (engine off) ... 12.4 V  OK
  Charging voltage (idle) ........ 14.2 V  OK
  AC ripple ...................... 78 mV   FAIL
  → Replace alternator before further ECM tests

Clean every ground point

Loosen, wire-brush, and re-torque: battery negative to chassis, engine-to-chassis ground strap (driver-side strut tower), and the ECM case ground. Apply dielectric grease.

Inspect ECM for water damage

ECM is under the passenger-side dash on most Outbacks. Pull it, inspect connector pins for green corrosion, and check the cowl drain near the windshield for clogged leaves. Water reaching the ECM means recurring damage until the drain is cleared.

WarningDisconnect the battery before unplugging the ECM. Hot-unplugging can cause additional damage.

Check for recent modifications

Any aftermarket device plugged into OBD-II (insurance dongles, tuners, dashcams with OBD power) can crash the ECM. Remove all aftermarket OBD devices and clear codes.

Try a reset and reflash

Disconnect battery for 20 minutes. Reconnect, perform a Subaru relearn (idle 5 min, throttle sweep). If P0606 persists, dealer/independent shop can attempt an ECM reflash before condemning it.

Replace or reman ECM (last resort)

If electrical supply is clean and the code persists, the ECM has failed internally. Subaru ECMs are coded to the immobilizer — replacement requires programming. Used ECMs need reprogramming too.

  6. Clear codes and drive for 30 minutes.
  7. If P0606 returns, take to a shop for ECM reflash.
  8. Only after all the above: consider ECM replacement.
