What Does P0741 Mean?
P0741 is set when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) commands the torque converter clutch (TCC) to lock up but doesn't see the expected drop in slip between engine RPM and transmission input speed. In plain terms: the converter is supposed to mechanically lock the engine to the transmission at cruise, and it isn't.
On the 2008–2016 Chevy Malibu with the 6T40/6T45 6-speed automatic, P0741 is most often a failing TCC solenoid or contaminated transmission fluid. Caught early, it's a $300–$600 fix; ignored, it leads to converter or pump damage running into thousands.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis
Read fluid level and condition
GM's 6T40 has no dipstick — use the check plug on the side of the pan with engine at 95–115°F idle. Fluid should be bright red. Brown or burnt smells = service needed before any other repair.
Scan TCM live data
Watch 'TCC Slip RPM' at 50 mph cruise. Should be <20 RPM. >100 RPM continuously = TCC not locking. Also note 'TCC Solenoid Duty %'.
CRUISE 55 MPH:
Engine RPM : 2200
Trans Input RPM : 1850
TCC Slip RPM : 350 ← should be <20
TCC Solenoid Duty : 100% ← commanded full
→ TCC commanded but not engagingService the fluid and filter
Drop the pan, replace filter, refill with GM Dexron HP (do NOT use generic Dexron VI — the 6T40 specifically calls for HP fluid). Drive 50 miles and recheck for P0741.
Replace TCC solenoid (in valve body)
Requires dropping the valve body. Source the OEM AC Delco solenoid — aftermarket has high failure rates. Plan 3 hours for a DIYer.
Install Sonnax TCC regulator valve kit if valve body is worn
Common on 100k+ mile 6T40s. The aluminum valve body wears around the TCC regulator valve, dropping apply pressure. Sonnax #84754-17K restores it without a rebuild.

- AC Delco TCC Solenoid (24252114) — approx $95
- GM Dexron HP ATF (6 qts) — approx $90
- AC Delco trans filter kit (6T40) — approx $32
- Sonnax TCC Regulator Valve Kit (84754-17K) — approx $110
- Remanufactured 6T40 torque converter — approx $380
Procedure:
- Warm transmission to 95–115°F per check procedure.
- Drain fluid via pan plug; remove pan (catch ~6 qts).
- Replace filter and pan gasket.
- Inspect pan magnet — light fuzz OK, metal chunks = converter.
- Refill via fill plug with Dexron HP until it drips at temp.
- If P0741 returns: drop valve body for solenoid replacement.
- Mark all bolts for length — 6T40 uses several different sizes.
- Torque valve body bolts to 89 in-lb in sequence.
- Refill, road test, recheck level at temp.
